A transformer is an electrical device that transfers electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction.
It consists of two or more coils of insulated wire wound around a core made of ferromagnetic material, such as iron.
Working of Transformer
When an alternating current (AC) flows through the primary coil, it creates a changing magnetic field in the core, which induces a voltage in the secondary coil through electromagnetic induction. This voltage can be either higher or lower than the input voltage, depending on the ratio of turns between the primary and secondary coils.
Transformers are commonly used in electrical power distribution, voltage regulation, and various other applications to change the voltage levels of electrical energy while maintaining the frequency of the AC signal.
Types of Transformer
Followings are the types of the transformer.
Step-Up Transformer: This type of transformer increases the voltage level from the primary winding to the secondary winding. Step-up transformers are commonly used in power transmission to increase the voltage for long-distance transmission, reducing the loss of power over the transmission lines.
Step-Down Transformer: Step-down transformers decrease the voltage level from the primary winding to the secondary winding. They are often used in distribution networks to reduce high-voltage electricity from transmission lines to lower voltages suitable for commercial and residential use.
Isolation Transformer: Isolation transformers have primary and secondary windings that are electrically separated from each other. They provide galvanic isolation, preventing the flow of current between the primary and secondary circuits. Isolation transformers are commonly used to protect sensitive equipment from voltage spikes, noise, and ground loops.
Auto-Transformer: An auto-transformer has a single winding with multiple taps that serve as both the primary and secondary winding. A portion of the winding acts as the primary, while another portion acts as the secondary. Auto-transformers are often used in voltage regulation and to provide different voltage levels without the need for separate windings.
Instrument Transformer: Instrument transformers are used in measurement and protection applications. They include current transformers (CTs) and potential transformers (PTs). CTs step down high currents to a standard measurable level, while PTs step down high voltages to safe levels for instrumentation and protection devices.
Distribution Transformer: Distribution transformers are used in distribution networks to supply electricity to residential, commercial, and industrial areas. They are typically oil-filled and mounted on utility poles or concrete pads. Distribution transformers are usually rated for lower power levels compared to power transformers used in transmission networks.
Power Transformer: Power transformers are used in high-voltage transmission networks to step up or step down voltage levels for long-distance transmission. They are designed to handle large power capacities and are essential for transmitting electricity efficiently across vast distances.
Furnace Transformer: Furnace transformers are specifically designed for powering electric arc furnaces used in steelmaking and other industrial processes. They provide high-current, low-voltage power to melt metals and perform other metallurgical processes.
